Southwest of Makkah al-Mukarramah rises Jabal al-Thawr, at an elevation of approximately 750 meters above sea level. This steep and rugged mountain is home to a small cave of great historical significance, where Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) sought refuge with his companion Abu Bakr (RA) during the migration from Makkah to Madinah.
The cave lies near the summit, and the ascent on foot typically takes between 1.5 and 2 hours. Although the path is unpaved, it is well-known and clearly marked. Certain stretches are physically demanding due to the rocky, steep terrain, often requiring rest along the way.
From this sacred place, the blessed journey of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)to Madinah began — a turning point that transformed the course of Islamic history. The migration (Hijrah) from Makkah to Madinah marked the beginning of a new era of faith, unity, and perseverance. It was a journey guided by divine wisdom and filled with lessons of trust, sacrifice, and steadfastness in the face of hardship.
Thawr Mountain stands as a silent witness to one of the most moving chapters in the Prophet’s biography. Within its cave, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his loyal companion Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq found refuge during the blessed migration. Surrounded by danger, they demonstrated the highest levels of patience, trust, and faith in Allah’s protection. The story of Thawr Cave remains an everlasting lesson in perseverance, sincerity, and the triumph of truth over hardship.
